Watch Your Wallet!

Here's an interesting article concerning Christian publishing. It doesn't specifically reference the fiction side of things, but if a big advance is going to certain people, then it makes sense that it would leave less money all around, including the fiction set.

  1. Jason, thanks for the link to that short piece,

Consider the example of Hollywood. Movie studios would sooner take their chances on a star-studded cast with an iffy script than an unknown actor with a promising concept. It's a safer bet.

As I read that, I couldn't help thinking about My Big, Fat Greek Wedding, The Passion of the Christ, and the Lord of the Rings. Safer bet, maybe, to go with iffy scripts and big name actors, but wow the payoff for the hits.

On the book front, I don't need to go any farther than Harry Potter.

I don't understand why more people don't seek out the good stuff--that which is truly unique and engaging--rather than that which will sell because it's got a famous name attached to it. I wish, wish, wish Christians cared more about quality.
